Players assume the role of Napoleon Bonaparte, or one of his major rivals, on a turn-based campaign map and engage in the subsequent battles in real-time. The game is set in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The game is the sixth stand-alone installment in the Total War series. Napoleon was released in North America on 23 February 2010, and in Europe on 26 February. Unfortunately, the startpos is a very large database, so you might need to ask someone for advice on how to find the part of the startpos which contains the age of the general.Napoleon: Total War is a turn-based strategy and real-time tactics video game developed by Creative Assembly and published by Sega for the Microsoft Windows and macOS. Tools for editing the startpos.esf should be available in the 'Tools, Tutorials and Resources' area of the Mod Workshops which I linked to. Is the general already in the game at the start of the campaign? If so, you might need to use a startpos editor to edit the startpos.esf. I cannot guarantee that anyone will answer, but there are some very skilled modders on TWC, so hopefully someone will know the answer. If you cannot find an answer, you could start a new thread and ask. I suggest looking through the NTW Mod Workshop, to see whether someone has already asked how to do this and what the answer was. Unfortunately, I do not know how to change the age of a general or switch general portraits. If you have edited the actual game files in a way which causes a crash, you might have to uninstall and reinstall the game. In this situation, if you have made a mod file, you can simply delete the mod file which crashes the game. It is possible to spend hours looking through very large database tables - and to not find an error.

In my experience, one tiny error - or one thing which the game does not like - when modding can cause the game to crash. The advantage of making mod files is that you can take them out and return to the vanilla (unmodified) game whenever you want to (as long as you keep track of which files are mods - you might want to make a list of the unmodified files in your Empire Total War/data directory, or to always include the word 'mod' in the name of your mod files). You can find guides on how to use Pack File Manager to make mod files in the 'Tools, Tutorials and Resources' area of the mod workshop which I linked to. I do not recommend editing the game files themselves. I recommend making mod files using Pack File Manager. ETW and NTW use very similar (but not identical) file systems, so what works for ETW might work for NTW.
